How to Fix Your Credit Score and Clear CRB Negative Listing in Uganda - Step-by-Step Guide

System | June 4, 2026

Your CRB Status Can Make or Break Your Business - Here Is How to Repair It

A negative listing on a Credit Reference Bureau (CRB) - even for a small unpaid mobile money loan - can block you from accessing formal credit for up to 5 years. In Uganda, over 2.1 million borrowers have some form of negative CRB record (Creditinfo Uganda, 2025). But the good news: you can clear, dispute, or "rehabilitate" your record with the right process.

This is the only step-by-step guide you need to fix your credit score, remove erroneous listings, and rebuild a positive credit history - allowing you to qualify for cheaper business loans, asset finance, and even rental agreements.

WARNING "CRB cleaners" who promise instant removal for a fee are almost always scams. The only legal way to clear a listing is through the lender that reported it or through a dispute with the CRB. This guide shows you the legitimate channels.

Understanding Uganda's Credit Reference System

Uganda currently has four licensed CRBs: Creditinfo Uganda, Metropol CRB, gnuGrid, and Armada. Banks, digital lenders, SACCOs, and even some utility companies report both positive and negative payment behaviour. A negative listing can be:

  • "Default" listing: You missed payments for 90+ days. Stays on your report for 5 years from the date of final settlement.
  • "Judgment" listing: A court ruled against you regarding a debt. Remains for 5 years.
  • "Write-off" listing: Lender gave up on collection - the most severe. Requires full settlement or negotiation.
  • "Inquiry" listing: Just a record that a lender checked your report (harmless if not excessive).

Step 1: Obtain Your Free Credit Report

By law, every Ugandan citizen is entitled to one free credit report per year from each CRB. Here is how to get it:

  1. Via Creditinfo Uganda: Visit www.creditinfo.co.ug -> "Get Your Report" -> Provide NIN and phone number. You will receive a link via SMS.
  2. Via Metropol CRB: USSD code *222# or download the "Metropol CRB" app. Follow prompts to request report.
  3. Via gnuGrid / Armada: Email your NIN and name to their support addresses (find them on Bank of Uganda website).

How do I check if I am blacklisted in Uganda?

Obtain your free credit report from Creditinfo Uganda (website or USSD *259#) or Metropol CRB (app or *222#). If the report shows "Default", "Judgment", or "Write-off" under the "Credit Account Status" column, you have a negative listing.

Step 2: Identify the Type of Negative Listing and Dispute Errors

If you see an account you do not recognise, or a default that you already paid, file a dispute immediately. The CRB is required to investigate within 21 business days.

  • Dispute with the CRB directly: Use their online dispute portal (Creditinfo and Metropol have forms). Attach proof of payment (mobile money receipts, bank statements).
  • Dispute with the lender: If the lender made a mistake, ask them to send a "correction request" to the CRB. Get this in writing.

Common grounds for dispute: identity theft, double reporting, already settled debt, outdated listing (older than 5 years).

Step 3: For Valid Defaults - Negotiate a "Paid-Up" or "Rehabilitation" Status

If the negative listing is accurate, you must settle the outstanding debt. But even after payment, the listing remains for 5 years unless you negotiate a "Paid-up" notation (which is better than "Default"). Some lenders also offer credit rehabilitation programmes:

  • Partial settlement: Offer a lump-sum (e.g., 40-60% of the debt) to settle the account. The lender updates the status to "Settled".
  • Repayment plan: Request a structured plan. After 6 consecutive on-time payments, ask the lender to change the status to "Performing".

Pro tip: Always get the updated status in writing and verify with the CRB after 30 days.

Step 4: Rebuild Your Credit Score from Scratch

Even after clearing a negative listing, your score will be low. The fastest way to rebuild is to take a small positive credit product and repay it perfectly:

  • Apply for a secured credit card from a bank (e.g., Stanbic's Visa Prepaid with a savings deposit).
  • Take a small digital loan (UGX 50,000-100,000) from a licensed lender that reports to CRBs (e.g., Numida, or dfcu Mobi Loan). Repay early or on time.
  • Join a SACCO that now reports positive data - consistent savings and small loans will boost your score.

Within 6-12 months of positive repayment, your CRB score will improve enough to qualify for larger business loans.

Common CRB Mistakes and Myths

  • Myth: Paying a loan after default automatically removes the listing. Fact: It changes the status to "Paid default" - still visible but less harmful.
  • Myth: Only banks report to CRBs. Fact: Many digital lenders, SACCOs, and even some mobile money lenders now report.
  • Mistake: Ignoring the listing. Fact: It will not go away on its own and will block future financing.

Final word: Fixing your credit score is a process of 2-6 months, but the reward is access to affordable loans at interest rates up to 50% lower than what "bad credit" lenders charge. Start today by requesting your free report.
